Categorical Internal Medicine

This traditional three-year internal medicine program is comprised of rotations in general medicine, critical care, emergency room and ambulatory medicine. Elective rotations on a consult service are also offered at Yale-New Haven Hospital.

At Griffin Hospital, most medical patients are admitted to team care. A team care unit typically is comprised of an attending physician and a PGY-2 or PGY-3 supervising resident, two interns and two medical students. The house staff, under close supervision of attendings are responsible for writing the admission history and physical exam, orders, progress notes and continued management of patients. On-call interns can admit a maximum of five patients per call night.

Ambulatory rotations cover a broad spectrum of outpatient medicine from Geriatrics and HIV/AIDS medicine to Women's Health and Convenient Care (walk-in medical care). Griffin staff spend one-half day per week at the Griffin Primary Care Center for their continuity of care clinic. Basic laboratory testing can be performed at the Primary Care Center.
