The Department of Preventive Medicine received a $300,000 training grant from the American Cancer Society (ACS) to create a Cancer Prevention and Control Track (CPCT) within our Preventive Medicine Residency Program. This track is part of our combined internal medicine-preventive medicine residency. The key accomplishes of the new CPCT will be: 1) to create a comprehensive preventive medicine curriculum in cancer prevention & control that emphasizes practical clinical skills, epidemiological and laboratory research, and community prevention training; 2) establishment of practicum opportunities that will provide broad experience in cancer epidemiology, control, prevention, and screening; 3) establishment of a list of courses in cancer prevention and control at the Yale University School of Public Health; 4) development of a new lecture series on cancer-related issues for residents; and 5) rotations at local and national organizations and institutions (such as American Cancer Society, Yale Cancer Center, National Cancer Institute, State Department of Public Health, CT Hospice, CT Tumor Registry, Yale-Griffin Prevention Research Center, Women Health Center, Local Health Departments. The track will be geared toward training internal medicine and preventive medicine board eligible residents who are likely to pursue future careers related to cancer prevention & control, enter public health and government institutions (such as the CDC) and programs related to cancer prevention and control, enter academic positions and pursue research in cancer prevention and control, or become independent researchers in cancer control and prevention.
